Kolkata Doctor Rape-Murder Live Updates:Trinamool Congress leader Jawhar Sircar on Sunday wrote a letter to Mamata Banerjee, informing her of his decision to quit the party, while resigning as a Rajya Sabha MP. “I am quitting as MP primarily because of WB government’s faulty handling of the most spontaneous public movement following the terrible rape-murder case at RG Kar Hospital,” Sircar said, posting his resignation letter to the TMC supremo on X. In his letter, the bureaucrat-turned-MP also mentioned that he had grown “disillusioned as the state government seemed quite unconcerned about corruption.”
Sircar entered the Rajya Sabha as TMC MP in 2021. Between November 2008 and February 2012, he was the Culture Secretary, before joining Prasar Bharati as its CEO in 2016. In an interview with The Indian Express, he said that the had quit the TMC “because nobody was listening.” “There is a perception of power and corruption. I had advised her (Mamata Banerjee) to take some steps. We don’t want the BJP in West Bengal but don’t mess it up,” Sircar said.
The CBI told a special court that Sandip Ghosh, former principal of the college, had a “criminal nexus” with “other co-accused” for “wrongful gain”. The central agency also claimed that two vendors, who Ghosh knew from the time he was posted at the Murshidabad Medical College and Hospital, benefited from the award of hospital contracts after he moved to Kolkata.

Kolkata Doctor Rape-Murder Live Updates: Suffered patiently for a month since RG Kar incident, Jawhar Sircar in his letter
Jawhar Sircar, a retired IAS officer, in his resignation letter to Mamata Banerjee claimed that corruption by a section of leaders of his party and lack of action against them was one of the reasons for his decision.
"I have suffered patiently for a month since the terrible incident at RG Kar Hospital, and was hoping for your direct intervention with the agitating junior doctors, in the old style of Mamata Banerjee. It has not happened and whatever punitive steps that government is taking now are too little and quite late," he said in the letter.
"I think normalcy may have been restored in this state much earlier, if the caucus of the corrupt doctors was smashed and those guilty of taking improper administrative actions punished immediately after the scandalous incident happened."

Kolkata Doctor Rape-Murder Live Updates: Thousands expected on streets to 'Reclaim the Night' as protests continue over RG Kar horror
Thousands of people were expected to hit the streets of West Bengal on Sunday as various demonstrations, including another 'Reclaim the Night' protest, were scheduled to be held seeking justice for the doctor who was allegedly raped and murdered at the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital a month ago.The body of the post-graduate trainee doctor was found at the state-run hospital in north Kolkata on the morning of August 9.
Noted people from different fields, including musicians, artistes, painters and actors, would join the 'Reclaim the Night' demonstration, which would start at 11 pm "to awaken the ruler", social activist Rimjhim Sinha said.
As part of the demonstration, people would gather at various intersections, crossings and roundabouts. While there will be multiple gatherings from Gol Park to Garia along the SC Mallick Road in south Kolkata, a march has been planned from Sodepur to Shyambazar along the BT Road in the north, one of the organisers said.

Kolkata doctor rape-murder: Victim’s family allege forced cremation, police bribery
The father of the 31-year-old junior doctor who was raped and murdered at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital claimed Wednesday night that he and his family were coerced into cremating her body in a hurry against their wishes.
He said they had desired to retain their daughter’s body for further rites but felt compelled to “succumb to immense pressure”, alleging that their house was surrounded by approximately 300-400 police officers after they returned from Tala police station.
“We couldn’t say anything then,” he said, during Wednesday night’s protest at RG Kar. The father also accused the deputy commissioner (North) of Kolkata Police of offering them money while they were still grieving, shortly after returning home from the hospital.
“We told her what we needed to. The DCP (Central) Indira Mukherjee is now holding press conferences and spreading misinformation. Why is she doing this?” he said.
